Frequently Asked Questions

We are more than happy to see you at any time in your fertility journey. Many patients seek an evaluation before they even begin trying while others have been trying for a long period of time before they seek treatment. For women over the age of 35, evaluation sooner rather than later is advised.

We will personalize your evaluation to what you need. You may or may not have had some testing performed by your primary doctor. Your physician at Alabama Fertility will discuss specific testing he or she believes you should undergo.

Couples are generally advised to seek medical help if they are unable to achieve pregnancy after a year of unprotected intercourse. Couples over the age of 35 are encouraged to seek care after 6 months of trying. The doctor will conduct an examination of both partners to determine their general state of health and to evaluate physical disorders that may be causing infertility.

If no cause can be determined at this point, more specific tests may be recommended. For women, these include an analysis of ovulation, x-ray of the fallopian tubes and uterus (HSG) and possibly a laparoscopy. For men, initial tests focus on semen analysis and evaluation of sperm function.

Most infertility cases are treated with conventional therapies, such as drug treatment or surgical repair of reproductive organs. About 10-15% will require In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Egg Donation.

Not necessarily. We have many treatment options. Some of these options may be covered by your specific insurance plan in part or whole. Others may be out of pocket costs that we will discuss in detail with you prior to your treatment.

If your physician recommends injections, either you or a support person (friend, partner, co-worker) can administer the shots. The injections need to be done around the same time every day, and afternoon or evening is preferable. Your nurse will review injection instruction with you at your visit.
